Following an impressive run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 with Russia, Tottenham Hotspur swooped to sign Pavlyuchenko just before the summer transfer window closed in a £13.8 million deal from Spartak Moscow.

The Russian began his career at Dynamo Stavropol in 1998 and after two years at Rotor 65 he made his name at Spartak Moscow, scoring 89 goals in 141 games. He moved to Tottenham having been the top scorer in the Russian league in both 2006 and 2007.

The striker scored three goals at Euro 2008 and was named in UEFA's Squad of the Tournament, although he did look as though he could be quite profligate in front of goal and that proved to be the case in a tough first season when he moved to White Hart Lane.

Although he scored in every round of the League Cup, except for the 2009 final which Spurs lost on penalties to Manchester United, in the league it was a different story and the Russian found himself as fourth choice striker for the following season. He had to wait for his chance under manager Harry Redknapp but as the 2009-10 season drew to a close he hit a hot-streak to help Spurs finish in the top four of the Premier League, scoring 14 goals in 15 starts.

Strengths: Athletic, tall striker who is good in the air and is a great poacher in the penalty area.

Weaknesses: Was criticised for a lacklustre attitude by Russia manager Guus Hiddink and is more an instinctive finisher than a clinical one.

Career high: Winning the 2003 Russian Cup in his first season at Spartak Moscow.

Career low: Finding himself out of favour and well down the pecking order during his second season with Spurs.

Style: A box player, who is at his best finishing chances, not creating them.

Quotes: "He's got a future here. We could have sold him in the window, but we didn't want to. I spoke to the chairman and said I want to keep him because he's got a part to play. Now he's playing the part I thought he could play." Spurs manager Harry Redknapp

Trivia: Pavlyuchenko is deputy councillor in Stavropol, representing the Vladimir Putin's United Russia party.
